Sometimes, you can't find the answer by just looking at the body.
Having touched countless bodies for over 23 years, there's something I've recently come to realize anew.
It means that the body and emotions are more interconnected than we realize.
Of course, not all pain stems from emotions.
Many problems stem from the body itself, including muscles, joints, nerves, and lifestyle habits.
That's why it's so important to gently touch the body and adjust the condition of the muscles and nerves.
However, when you interact with many people on the job, you often encounter situations that cannot be explained by looking at "the body alone."
I recently heard this story from one of my students.
For a long time, she struggled with interpersonal relationships, but continued working, suppressing her own feelings because "it was for the sake of making a living."
Amidst all of this, I had the opportunity to deeply reflect on myself.
Then one day, she decided, "I'm going to stop putting up with this," and "I'm going to quit this job."
To her surprise, she told me that the physical pain she had been experiencing had lessened considerably.
Humans cannot live apart from their minds and bodies.
Sadness, anger, anxiety, patience...
I feel every day that continuing to harbor such emotions can certainly have some kind of physical effect.
In fact, this morning my son, who is in his third year of junior high school, was complaining of back pain.
As I listened to her, she confided that something hurtful had happened at school.
When she put her feelings into words and acknowledged that she "was sad," she said that "her back felt a little better."
Of course, we cannot conclude from this incident alone that "back pain was caused by emotions."
However, with each experience like this, I realize the importance of not just looking at the body, nor just looking at the mind, but paying attention to both.
Therefore, what I value most in Swedish massage is not just loosening the muscles.
Being able to be touched by reassuring hands.
The relaxation of tense nerves.
And it's about laying the foundation for that person to return to their true self.
The body may be a mirror that reflects a person's entire life.
Therefore, I want to continue learning about the body, while also respecting each person's heart and way of life, and engaging with them individually.
