Why does Swedish massage "warm you up from the inside"?
Why does Swedish massage "warm you up from the inside"?
— A deep, hot spring-like warmth is created not by frictional heat, but by "shear insulation" —
Common comments we hear from people who have received a Swedish massage at EAO include, "It warms you up from the inside, not just on the surface of your body," and "It's like being in a hot spring."
This is by no means a figment of the imagination; it is a phenomenon that can be explained physically and physiologically.
Today, I will explain the mechanism in an organized way so that you can confidently explain it when you perform the treatment.
1. Why our massage uses "a small amount of oil"
Swedish massage uses only a very small amount of oil.
There is a clear reason for this.
If you use plenty of oil, your hands will just glide over your skin.
In other words, the force escapes at the skin's surface.
On the other hand, if you use a small amount of oil...
- Moderate friction is created between the hand and skin.
- Makes it easier for the therapist to lean on the patient's weight.
- That pressure is transmitted to the deeper layers beneath the skin.
This is the starting point of our treatment.
2. It's "shear adiabatic heat," not "frictional heat."
Here's an important physics term to remember: "shear."
Shear refers to the phenomenon in which layers of an object shift in a direction parallel to each other.
To give you an analogy, it's like gently sliding the layers of a mille-feuille sideways.
This is exactly what is happening in the subcutaneous tissue and fascial layers beneath our hands.
3. Why does heat get generated when "layers shift"?
Human body tissues possess viscoelastic properties (a viscous, viscous nature).
This means it's a material that possesses both the elasticity of rubber and the stickiness of honey.
Between the fascia and the muscle, there is loose connective tissue containing hyaluronic acid, which acts as a lubricant.
When shear force is applied here, the viscous layer slowly shifts , and the energy is converted into heat.
This phenomenon is called "viscous dissipation" in physics, and it's the same principle as when you stir honey with a spoon and it gets slightly warmer.
In other words, we are transforming the tissue itself into a heat-generating element within the customer's body.
4. Three mechanisms that spread warmth throughout the body
Shear insulation doesn't end there.
A chain reaction occurs within the body.
① Endogenous fever (heat generation in the deep tissues)
Heat is directly generated by shearing between the fascial layer and the muscle layer.
② Increased blood flow
Deep blood vessels dilate, and warmed blood is transported throughout the body.
③ Switching the autonomic nervous system
Slow, deep pressure makes the parasympathetic nervous system dominant, causing even the peripheral blood vessels in the hands and feet to dilate.
That's why my fingertips feel warm and cozy.
These three elements combine to create the "full-body warming sensation, like being in a hot spring."
summary
The feeling of "warmth from within" you get from Swedish massage is not your imagination.
A small amount of oil is applied → deep pressure is applied using body weight → shearing occurs between fascial layers → intrinsic heat is generated due to viscosity dissipation → and this heat spreads throughout the body through blood flow and autonomic nerve reflexes.
Just knowing that will give you confidence in your hands.
Starting today, try performing treatments while imagining what is happening inside your clients' bodies.
